How much does deck railing cost in Boise, ID?

Published Boise pricing from Iron Crest Remodel runs $20–$35 per linear foot installed for wood railing, $30–$50 for aluminum, $35–$60 for composite, $50–$80 for cable and $70–$120 for glass. A 16×20 deck needs roughly 48 feet. Fixr's 2023 national figures run higher.

What does deck railing cost per linear foot?

Railing is priced by the linear foot installed, and material sets most of the price. The table puts the one published Treasure Valley source we found, Iron Crest Remodel's Boise pricing page, next to Fixr's national installed figures from January 2023. The two disagree, and the gap is worth understanding before you compare bids.

Installed deck railing per linear foot. Iron Crest Remodel (Boise, read October 2026) and Fixr (national, January 2023). Market figures, not Valley Decks prices.
RailingIron Crest (Boise)Fixr (national, 2023)Fixr materials only
Wood$20–$35$30–$50$10–$15
Aluminum / metal$30–$50$45–$85$25–$50
Composite$35–$60$80–$165$50–$100
Cable$50–$80$115–$175$70–$125
Glass$70–$120$140–$210$80–$150

Fixr's numbers sit well above Iron Crest's for composite, cable and glass. Neither source spells out exactly what its per-foot price includes, so post spacing, post sleeves and caps, infill style and the product line can all account for part of the gap. Two bids for "composite railing" can describe very different systems. Fixr's materials-only column shows how much of each installed price is labor; for composite, materials alone run $50–$100 per foot. Decks.com's May 2026 guide spans much of both, at $25–$100-plus per foot for composite and metal systems.

How much railing does a typical deck need?

Measure the open edges, not the perimeter. An attached deck usually needs a guard on three sides, minus the stair opening, plus guards or handrails on the stairs themselves. The table shows that math for three common sizes, each attached on its long side with a 4-foot stair opening, priced at Iron Crest's Boise range. Our arithmetic, not a quote.

At Fixr's national 2023 rates the same 48-foot run on a 16×20 deck costs $1,440–$2,400 in wood and $3,840–$7,920 in composite. On a raised deck, that makes railing one of the largest single lines on the bid, which is why it should be priced on its own. Freestanding decks, wraparound decks and decks with a corner cut at 45 degrees all need more footage than the same area attached on one side.

When does a deck need a railing at all?

Under the 2018 IRC that Idaho adopts, a guard is required where the walking surface is more than 30 inches above the grade within 36 inches of the edge. That is a different number from Boise's permit trigger: a 20-inch-high deck in Boise needs a permit (over 12 inches) but no guard, while a 36-inch-high deck needs both. The guard rules that set the price are listed below.

Guard and stair-rail rules that shape railing cost (2018 IRC as adopted in Idaho; AWC DCA 6)
RuleRequirementCost effect
Guard requiredSurface more than 30 in above grade (R312.1.1)Low decks can skip railing entirely
Guard height on the deckAt least 36 in (R312.1.2)Rules out most decorative low rails
Guard height on stairsAt least 34 in from the nosing line (R312.1.2)Stair sections are separate, angled runs
OpeningsMust not pass a 4-in sphere; 4⅜ in on the open side of stairs; 6 in at the triangle under the stair rail (R312.1.3)Sets baluster spacing and cable count
HandrailRequired at 4 or more risers, 34–38 in high (R311.7.8)A graspable rail adds cost on stairs
Guard postsDCA 6 details hold-downs rated for 1,800 lb at each guard postBlocking and hardware at every post, added labor

Guard posts are where cheap railing fails. A post notched and bolted only to the outside of the rim joist loosens over time, and a loose guard is a fall hazard. The hold-down hardware and blocking behind each post add labor that a per-foot price may or may not include, so ask. Railing options are compared in more depth in our deck railing options guide.

Stair railings and stairs

Stairs usually need two railing runs, each sloped, plus a graspable handrail once there are four or more risers. Stair sections take longer to install than straight runs because every post and rail is cut to the stair angle. The stairs themselves are priced per step: Iron Crest lists $150–$350 per step in Boise, and Fixr's 2023 national figures run $75–$200 per step for wood stairs on pre-cut stringers and $225–$450 per step for metal. A deck about three feet up needs roughly five risers.

Should you repair or replace a deck railing?

Repair if the posts are solid and only caps, balusters or a rail section are damaged; replace if posts move or the guard is too short. Fixr's January 2025 deck-repair data lists railing repair at $25–$100 per linear ft and full railing replacement at $50–$250 per linear ft, and HomeAdvisor's June 2026 page lists railing repairs at $500–$4,000 per project. Older guards under 36 inches, or with gaps that pass a 4-inch sphere, are usually replaced rather than patched. Our deck repair cost guide covers the rest of a repair list.

Boise factors that change which railing you buy

  • Sun and heat. Boise averages about 55 days a year at 90°F or hotter (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). Wood rails and caps check and gray fastest of any deck part, so a wood railing carries a staining cost every few years. Dark powder-coated aluminum stays sound but gets hot to the touch on a west-facing deck.
  • Views. Foothills and river-view lots often go to cable or glass for the sight lines, which puts them at the top of both price tables.
  • Freeze-thaw. With 108 freezing nights a year, water in post sleeves and around fastener holes freezes repeatedly. Sleeved composite and aluminum posts handle that better than exposed wood post tops.
  • Wildfire overlay. Boise's Wildland-Urban Interface overlay applies ignition-resistant construction in the Foothills. How that applies to a railing should be confirmed with Boise Fire before you choose; aluminum, cable and glass infill are noncombustible, which can simplify the conversation. See our Foothills wildfire decking guide.
  • HOA rules. Many Treasure Valley subdivisions limit railing color and style, and an approved spec is cheaper than a rejected one. Our HOA deck approval guide covers the process.

A checklist for railing quotes

  1. Total linear feet, split into deck-level runs and stair runs.
  2. Product brand and line, infill type, post spacing and color.
  3. Post attachment method and hold-down hardware at each guard post.
  4. Guard height (36 inches minimum on the deck) and baluster or cable spacing that stops a 4-inch sphere.
  5. Handrail on stairs with four or more risers, and whether it is a separate graspable rail.
  6. Gates, corners and transitions priced as their own lines.
  7. Removal and disposal of the old railing on a replacement.

For the full picture of a new build, railing sits on top of the platform figures in the Boise deck cost guide. When you have a railing type in mind, request an estimate and we will measure the runs, check the guard posts and price the system you picked.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to put railing on a 12×16 deck?
Attached on the 16-foot side with a 4-foot stair opening, a 12×16 deck needs about 36 feet of guard. At Iron Crest's Boise per-foot ranges that is $720–$1,260 in wood, $1,080–$1,800 in aluminum and $1,800–$2,880 in cable, before stair rails. Fixr's 2023 national ranges are higher.
What is the cheapest deck railing?
Wood, at $20–$35 per linear foot in Iron Crest's Boise pricing and $30–$50 in Fixr's 2023 national table. It costs the least up front but needs staining every few years in Boise sun. Aluminum is the next step up and needs only washing, which narrows the gap over the years you own the deck.
Is cable railing worth the cost in Boise?
For view decks it often is. Cable runs $50–$80 per linear foot in Iron Crest's Boise pricing and $115–$175 in Fixr's 2023 national data, more than wood or aluminum. It keeps sight lines open and the infill is noncombustible. Cables need periodic re-tensioning, and the end posts must be stiff enough to hold the tension.
Does my deck need a railing?
Under the 2018 IRC as adopted in Idaho, a guard is required where the deck surface is more than 30 inches above the grade within 36 inches of its edge. Below that, a railing is optional. Stairs with four or more risers need a handrail. Boise's permit trigger is lower, at 12 inches, so a low deck can need a permit without needing a guard.
How much does glass deck railing cost?
Iron Crest's Boise page lists glass at $70–$120 per linear foot installed, and Fixr's January 2023 national table lists $140–$210. Glass is the priciest common option. It blocks wind on exposed decks and keeps views, but shows dust and water spots and needs more frequent cleaning than other types.
Can I replace only the railing on my deck?
Yes, if the deck frame is sound. Fixr's 2025 repair data prices full railing replacement at $50–$250 per linear ft. The new guard posts need solid attachment to the framing with hold-down hardware, so the rim joist and blocking get checked first. New railing must meet the current 36-inch height and 4-inch opening rules.
